a game inspired by the weird ending of hans christian andersen's original little mermaid 🌊

--

made with bitsy color +. song made in beepbox, and packaged together with add bitsy audio

--

i wrote a short audio drama about the original little mermaid recently, called "dangerous" with artist soapbox and one interesting part of andersen's original tale i had a hard time including (and didn't end up including) is the very faith based ending.

per wikipedia

"Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warm sun and discovers that she has turned into a luminous and ethereal earthbound spirit, a daughter of the air. As the Little Mermaid ascends into the atmosphere, she is greeted by other daughters, who tell her she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to obtain an immortal soul. Because of her selflessness, she is given the chance to earn her own soul by doing good deeds for mankind for 300 years, and will one day rise up into Heaven."

so, I thought that the sea folk bitsy jam would be a good way to explore it and give the little mermaid something like a happy ending, even if it is with the sea witch who originally tricked her.

if you'd like to learn more about the queer allegory of the little mermaid and the reason i'm attracted to this story lately, this lithub article is great

thanks- hope you like it!

This felt so quaint, almost like an old music box or a fold-out book with fairytales, or a filmstrip my parents used to show me when I was a kid. The music score is very fitting, and I liked how the seamlessly 'story space' shifted into a literal undersea cave, as the story got darker and the narrative changed its perspective.

Beautiful work!

I submitted my game... I have zero idea if I did it correct I've never done this before :/

wishing you the best!

How do you change the position of the character or sprites by using code in Bitsy

hey there, i'm not sure if i'd be able to help you with this, but the creator of bitsy made a site, which should have a lot of tutorials:

http://bitsy.org/

thanks!

o

Wonderful story! But I must mention:

  • The art..!
  • The music..!
  • The colours..! (seriously, how did you get some many colours in a Bitsy game?!)

thanks so much! I have it linked on the page but I used bitsy color + by aurysystem, which allows you to use a lot of colors. I made the music on beepbox, kind of randomly, so I’m glad you liked it! I love that the bitsy community has a lot of hacks and free tools ❤️

Ah…! Now I see it. Thank you for the quick reply!

In the Bitsy game maker how do I set the position of the character

Hey there, if you’re in the editor and have avatar up in the like drawing box you can place it on the map. The bitsy page should have some tutorial links, however, I’m certainly not an expert!

Ok

omg i had chills! your writing, the progression of each level, it was so captivating! i love how you adapted this story and made it your own!! <3

Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed ❤️🙌

This was so wonderful to play through!!! I love how the levels became more complex as the story became more complex and I really liked the surreal art :)
